World Fair Trade Day

What Is World Fair Trade Day?

World Fair Trade Day is the one day when people all around the world unite in international celebration of fair trade.  This year World Fair Trade Day falls on the 9th of May, the first Saturday of Fair Trade Fortnight in Australia and New Zealand.

The theme of World Fair Trade Day is ‘BIG BANG!!’ - brought to life in a global day of drumming and other events to beat poverty beat climate change beat economic crisis. Kicking off on the date line and circling the earth in a rolling programme of events, through all cultures and traditions, from first to last light, closing in Samoa.

IFAT member organisations based in 70 countries, along with Fair Trade shops, networks and supporters will host events to promote fair trade and campaign for justice in trade.

Oxfam

Oxfam is dedicated to finding lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. Oxfam's vision is of a safer, fairer world in which people control their own lives, their basic human  rights are achieved and the environment is sustained.

They aim to increase the number of people who have a sustainable livelihood, access to social services, an effective voice in decisions, safety from conflict and disaster, and equal rights and status.  Oxfam works in partnership with poor communities across the world to help people identify and address the root causes of poverty.

Oxfam is working to raise public awareness about Fairtrade products and challenging businesses that practice unfair trade.  Oxfam is also working to change the rules governing international trade, so that trade becomes part of the solution to poverty, not part of the problem.
